Harnessing Attachment Theory in Psychotherapy: A Path to Deeper Healing
Love between a mother and child
In the ever-evolving field of mental health, attachment theory stands as a cornerstone for understanding human relationships and emotional well-being.
Developed by psychologist John Bowlby and expanded by Mary Ainsworth in the 1960’s and 70’s, this framework assumes that our early bonds with caregivers shape the way we are inclined to attach to others - our “attachment styles”: secure, anxious, avoidant, or disorganized. Our attachment style influences how we connect with others throughout life.
“In a world of fleeting connections, attachment-focused psychotherapy at Forma Counseling builds lasting foundations. If you’re ready to explore your attachment style and unlock deeper healing, reach out today. Your path to a more connected, authentic life starts here.”

How Forma Integrates Attachment Principles into Therapy
At Forma Counseling, we understand and use attachment principles into our psychotherapy practices. Cultivating a deeper understanding of attachment styles and trauma greatly help to navigate anxiety, depression, trauma, and relational challenges. By drawing on these insights, our therapists foster transformative growth, promoting secure attachments that enhance resilience and fulfillment.
Attachment theory in psychotherapy isn't just theoretical; it's a practical tool for unraveling deep-seated patterns - patterns which show up again and again in our present-day relationships. Therapists explore how childhood experiences manifest in adult behaviors, such as fear of abandonment in anxious attachments or emotional distancing in avoidant ones. This awareness empowers clients to reframe their narratives, building healthier self-perceptions and interpersonal dynamics. A good therapy experience, in which you have the safety of expressing all the unexpressed and unexplored feelings that should have been nurtured, can cultivate significant healing and an internal transformation of feeling of security.
Both John and Sevilla are trained psychodynamic psychotherapists. This overarching modality is heavily rooted in childhood experience of attachment. The whole model of attachment theory falls under the umbrella of psychodynamic therapy, as both Bowlby and Main were of this tradition. Therefore, our training strongly emphasized working with this profoundly important and fundamental element of the human experience
Attachment Aspects of Forma Modalities
Parts work, a core modality of our practice, is primarily informed by early attachments and the defensive mechanisms that emerged from our younger selves to maintain connection to our attachment figures at all costs. Often these novel but ultimately un-sustainable strategies became hard-wired. With parts work, we reverse-engineer the specific early defenses and reorient these defenses, identified as early parts of self, to learn to trust and love in a way they should have been allowed to but could not in childhood.
For couples, we excel in EFT, which leverages attachment theory to rekindle emotional bonds. Research-backed and short-term, EFT views the security of partner connections as the key lever for positive shifts. By identifying attachment injuries—moments of disconnection that erode trust—we guide couples toward openness, empathy, and mutual support. Complementing this, our Imago Relationship Therapy reduces conflict and blame, fostering understanding rooted in attachment needs.
Benefits of Attachment Therapy
Benefits of attachment focused therapy from our clients include: greater self-awareness, improved communication, and stronger relationships. One might enter therapy grappling with grief from loss, only to discover how avoidant attachments amplify isolation. Through our spiritually and philosophically informed lens—blending existential therapy with attachment work—we help uncover purpose amid suffering, without imposing beliefs.
